Monday was time to bid farewell to Cornwall. It’s almost 300 miles from Marazion back to Frodo’s storage facility, which is possible but less than appealing; we are getting into the 150-mile jumps frame of mind.
Halfway back put as at Cheddar, or thereabouts, where Francine had found what sounded like an interesting independent campsite. The Cheddar Bridge campsite is actually right beside the Cheddar Caravan and Motorhome Club campsite but, though, the pitches sounded a little smaller [80m2], it had the advantage of being an adults only site. Rugrats shouldn’t have been a problem midweek in term time but its nice to support such ventures. Francine had booked us in.
After a relatively trouble free journey, other than a 10-minute hold up getting through the long term roadworks on the A30, we checked in at about 13:00.
Following our drive we went for a leg-stretch into Cheddar itself. We had been here once before many years ago. I was expecting to be surrounded by cheese shops so imagine my surprise when I failed to find any. We did see a butcher, the shop being closed this afternoon, but which mentioned cheese along with a few other deli items. That was it, though. What we did find was a Tesco and a Sainsburys, neither of which had local cheese. We topped our evening meal supplies up at the latter.
I enquired of the proprietor at our campsite about cheese shops. There were two, he said, but they were slightly outside the village area up towards Cheddar Gorge itself. We would have needed to walk further. Francine did find a review of the butchers stating that it had good Cheddar cheese and at a much less touristy price than the outlets up the gorge. No surprise there.
